Dorian Gray in multi-colored vinyl strip cape. 1968.

Signed lower right. On cardboard. 44,3 x 30,9 cm (17,4 x 12,1 in), size of sheet.
The work was also used as a model for the lithograph in colors of the same name, plate 4 from the portfolio "The Picture of Dorian Gray" from 1968 (cf. cat. Galerie Mikro, Berlin 1970, 47 d).

PROVENANCE: Private collection Belgium.

Jim Dine views himself less an exponent of Pop Art than as “a classic artist, who in the course of his career has tried out all the media: painting, drawing, all facets of the graphic arts, sculpture and has written books of poetry. In addition, there is the European influence – Dine lived in London for several years from 1967 [...] Dine did not want to be narrowed down to a specifically American Pop iconography; he has striven – unlike the Pop painters, if it can be put in such terms – for higher things.” (Ivo Kranzfelder, in: Künstler. Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, Munich 1996, p. 3). [NB].

Firmly mounted on backing paper at points on the reverse. The foil's lower left corner with crease marks. Upper left corner with minor crease mark and minimally shopworn respectively.
