Kurenkähne auf Nidden. 1939.
Watercolour and pencil.
Monogrammed and dated lower right. With inscriptions "IV/36" and "18" on the reverse. On Ingres laid paper by Hahnemühle (with watermark). 48 : 62,2 cm (18,8 : 24,4 in), the full sheet. Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky began training as an artist at the Gerda Koppel Private Art School in Hamburg (1922-25), where her teachers included Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, before studying at the Landeskunstschule am Lerchenfeld from 1930 until 1933. In 1937/38 the artist trained at the Berlin Werkkunstschule and then took over the Gerda Koppel Art School in Hamburg. Stock-Schmilinsky at first had stylistic affinities with Expressionism. She worked mainly in watercolour, the medium best suited to her spontaneous approach that was inspired by the impressions of a moment. In the 1930s the artist went to Paris and Italy several times, accompanied by her friend Eduard Bargheer, to study art. She also spent a great deal of time on the North Sea and the Baltic. Our fresh, delicately coloured work, in which the artist’s talent as a colourist is amply apparent, was done in Nidden. [NB]

PROVENIENZ: From the artist's estate.

Good overall impression. Margins with minor ripples due to the technique. The centre with a minor vertical crease mark. The upper margin with a negligible crease mark. Upper left with minor pale stains. All in all with isolated soft foxmarks.
