Modern Book

Works from the 20th century offer interesting opportunities for the compilation of a book collection or a private library. Book publications saw a great upswing, both as far as literature and art are concerned, holding a true treasure trove of rare and valuable books.

Part of Modern Book Art are works of Art Déco and Art Nouveau, Impressionism and Expressionism, Surrealism and Constructivism, all the way to Post-War Literature, the writings of the Gruppe 47 (Group 47) and publications from Zero artists and many more. The range also includes the main works like James Joyce‘ Ulysses or Thomas Mann‘s Zauberberg, dedication copies by famous authors, acclaimed expressionist book illustrations, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner‘s Umbra vitae (1924) or Wassily Kandinsky‘s Klängen (1913), Pablo Picasso‘s book publications, Kurt Schwitter‘s typographic accomplishments or modern press prints from the Raamin-Press or the Bear Press in Bayreuth.
The genre livre de peintre, originating in France at the beginning of the 20th century, is also worthwhile mentioning in this context, the respective German term is ‘Malerbuch‘ (Painters Book), which refers to books with original graphic works. The artist‘s contribution to a ‘Malerbuch‘ is not only confined to the mere illustration, instead it can be considered a free interpretation or a pictorial counterpart of the text.
The finest painter books of Modernism, which add splendor to every library, include, among others, Pablo Picasso‘s Histoire naturelle (1942), Marc Chagall‘s Fables (1952), Max Ernst‘s Une semaine de Bonté (1934), Georges Braque‘s Si je mourais la-bas (1962), Joan Miró‘s Parler seul (1950), Salvador Dali‘s Les chants de Maldoror (1934), Henri Matisse‘s Jazz (1947) and Ferdinand Léger‘s Cirque (1950).
First editions of acclaimed works from the 20th century can have strong appeal on collectors; they outline the socio-historical trends of the age and mark the beginning of new ideas and developments. One of the most important novels from this era is Thomas Mann‘s “Buddenbrooks“, released in small circulation in 1901, it realizes top prices in auctions today. This is true for many first editions and early publicationsf by authors underestimated during their lifetime or who were discovered at a later point, such as the early works by Franz Kafka, which did not sell well during his lifetime – today they are much sought-after in international auctions. Dedication copies of first English editions from J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series also realize top prices in auctions today.
