Büste Justine. Um 1920.
terracotta. Dark grey sherd with brown oxide engobe.
Rudloff 108 e. Presumably unique piece. 20,5 x 22,5 x 11 cm (8 x 8,8 x 4,3 in).
Marcks registered the bust in one of his work diaries which he kept according to the material (in this case terracotta, under the number 9. From a series of terracota masks and heads from around 1923, of which just a few have been preserved.
This bust shows a woman from Obersalzberg. There is proof of regular sojourns on the Obersalzberg between 1915 and 1920. His wife's family owned a house there, and to him it was a place where he was able to recover from the war. Under the influence of local folk art he increasingly turned to a simplified style which would become decisive for his activities at the at the Bauhaus. [KD].

We are grateful to Dr. Arie Hartog, Gerhard Marcks Haus, Bremen, for his kind expert advice
