Cassé de feu. 1963/2009.
Object. Burnt matches, traces of fire and silver acrylic paint on plywood plate.
Signed lower center. Verso of plate signed, dated and titled. 41 x 41 x 2.8 cm (16.1 x 16.1 x 1.1 in).

With two photographs on front and rear that have been confirmed by the artist.

This work originates from a work group that was characterized by the usage of fire as a means of artistic creation. In this work the color red, quite typical of Aubertin, has been replaced by a cold and metallic silver and is contrasted with the warm shade of bronze left behind by the smoke. The individual matches were not applied onto the plywood plate in planar manner, instead they were forced into the surface, akin to Bernard Aubertin's nail pictures, so that they are in different states of destruction by fire. The matches' stereometric arrangement and the hard metallic carrier are contrasted with the destructive enegy of the fire, which, being a primal element of creation, bears order and chaos, principles and chance, structure and desctruction at the same time.
