EXHIBITION: Günther Förg, Museum Fridericianum Kassel, 7 October - 16 December, 1990/Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Gent, 19 January - 31 March, 1991 (verso with the label).

Günther Förg's works live from the impact of the color and the stroke of the brush. In contrast to Hard-edge painting his color fields, applied with broad brushes, gain vivid structures, revitalizing the monochrome surfaces and setting them into oscillation. In our work, created in 1990, Förg paints over the yellow surface with black color spreading it through spontaneous, strongly accentuated brush strokes in equally spontaneous horizontal and vertical paths over the painting. By using these stylistic tools he combines the pure effect of color with a classic painterly touch. Often the conceptual construction disappears behind the process related creativity. „By experimenting formal structures and motives with different materials and mediums, similar to the serial development of a topic, Förg's attitude and method become obvious: It's not the autonomous singular work but the working process moving into focus and becomingthe message“ (translated quote from Ingrid Rein, in: Günther Förg, exhibition cat.Fridericianum Kassel, Stuttgart 1990, p. 10).
