Portraits were Dix' main theme in the twenties. However, to Dix it was not about illustrating a complex character. He was interested in rendering a person's obvious mode of being and he preferred female portraits as subject. This half nude at a table, shown in strict side view, is a remarkably beautiful work, especially for the sensitive coloring: The hair in a natural hazel is in harmony with the background. The soft complexion makes the model fragile, an impression that is even increased by her nudity. With just a few basic tints Dix created an empathic portrait that emanates both tenderness and harmony.
