PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany.

After studying at the Fine Art Academy in Bucharest, where he began his career, Victor Brauner went to Paris in 1925-27, moving there permanently in 1930. In the late 1920s, following an “inner compulsion”, Brauner sought contact to the Surrealists around André Breton. This is the influence that informs our work, which, in the emphasis laid on beauty of line and serial repetition of hatching within contours, also recalls Brauner’s compatriot, Constantin Brancusi.
